Shelf Styling 101

Styling your shelves is a creative and fun way to add visual interest to your space. Here are a few tips and things to remember as you get styling:

  1. Consider the backdrop: Take into account the backdrop of your shelves. If your shelves have a solid color or patterned background, it can influence the way your items are perceived. Choose items that contrast or complement the backdrop to enhance their visual impact.

  2. Mix heights and sizes: Vary the heights and sizes of the items you display to add visual interest. Place taller items towards the back and shorter items towards the front to create depth. This could include placing a tall vase or a stack of books behind smaller objects. Some of my favorite vases come from CB2, I just bought a few of these Haute Ceramic Vases and love them.

  3. Play with symmetry and asymmetry: Decide whether you want a symmetrical or asymmetrical arrangement. Symmetry can create a formal and balanced look, while asymmetry adds a more dynamic and eclectic feel. You can achieve symmetry by placing matching items on each side of the shelf or create asymmetry by using different objects but maintaining a balanced composition.

  4. Balance colors and textures: Consider the colors and textures of the items you're displaying. Aim for a balanced distribution of colors and textures throughout the shelves. You can mix and match complementary or contrasting colors and textures to create visual interest. Believe it or not, you can actually buy book bundles by color, like these from Pottery Barn, which makes it so easy!

  5. Use decorative accents and plants: Incorporate decorative accents such as vases, sculptures, candles, or framed artwork to add personality and style. These items can act as focal points or anchor pieces within your arrangement. Right now I’m obsessed with these ceramic pieces from West Elm.

  6. Layer and stack items: Instead of lining up items in a straight row, try overlapping or stacking them to add depth and dimension. This technique can be applied to books, frames, or other flat objects.

  7. Leave empty space: Don't overcrowd. Leaving some empty space between objects will prevent the arrangement from looking cluttered and allow each item to stand out.

Don't be afraid to rearrange and experiment with different configurations. Play around with the placement of items until you achieve a look that you're happy with. Remember, you can always change and update the arrangement as your style evolves!
